Broken Arrow! Broken Arrow!
US unit in danger of being over-run... copy?
Ever since I first started Vietnam wargaming I have held on to the vision of large-scale, sweeping, battalion-sized battles!
Numerous things prevented me from realising this vision, such as figure-scale, figure availability, expense, time, rules availability and so forth. Consequently, like most other gamers of this period I have for the most part of my gaming life, stuck with the tried and tested, namely 15mm and 20mm skirmish gaming.
Some time ago, to get around the limitations of skirmish games, I started writing my own set of rules for Vietnam wargaming (they are still a 'work in progress') and decided that I would switch to using 10mm figures in order to accomodate larger scaled games (see my Vietnam Collections). Despite not completing my rules I nonetheless kept on collecting and painting the figures so that I now have a substantial collection of these.
Since I didn't finish writing my own rules, the figures never really got much use and were only used for play-testing. No other rules set that I knew of at the time afforded me the opportunity to play games of Battalion sized or larger.
Forunately, over the last couple of years, that situation has now changed and there are several sets of rules that can be utilised for battalion-sized games especially using 10mm figures.
When playing now, I generally use one of three sets of rules; Cold War Commander (Pete Jones), Incoming! (Barrie Lovell) and Modern Micro Armour (GHQ). All three are suitable for larger games. These pages offer no preference as to which set I consider to be 'best' but suffice to say that all three are excellent and afford a different kind of game from one another.
Broken Arrow is my attempt to chronicle and show-case my 10mm collection and the fun that I am having with them.
Should I become President...I will not risk American lives...by permitting any other nation to drag us into the wrong war at the wrong place at the wrong time through an unwise commitment that is unwise militarily, unnecessary to our security and unsupported by our allies. - John F. Kennedy, 1960
Now we have a problem in making our power credible, and Vietnam is the place. - John F. Kennedy, 1961
Fire Support Base Mary-Helen
This month I have launched a new project for Broken Arrow called FSB Mary-Helen. This is a fictional Vietnam Campaign that uses the FNG: Operations rules.
Follow a US Army Infantry Company assigned to a new Area of Operations (AO) as it establishes itself in the region and goes to work winning back the Hearts and Minds of the populace and wresting control from the local VC and their support forces from the NVA.
